UPS AND DOWNS

This video stars Tyler Gray, and Jayden Hogan in a romantic music video.

This is a wordless music video I created called “Ups And Downs”. This video illustrates the ups and downs of relationships. I made this is in Maryville Missouri and tried to utilize actions more than words to tell a story.

PARANOIA

This video stars Tyler Gray, and Ashley Distefano in a short horror film.

This film was comprised in Maryville Missouri and was filmed in my house at the time. This film demonstrates scary content as well as laid-back comedic content to spice things up.

FINDING NEMO RECUT AS A HORROR TRAILER

In this video, I recut “Finding Nemo” clips to make a horror film trailer.

When I made this I thought it would be fun to restructure a film from a comedy-drama to a horror film. I recut clips from the film “Finding Nemo” and came up with this horror trailer.

Capitalism in America:

how one winter storm opened the eyes of our nation.

A greeting card of Texas that combines elements of a happy looking state greeting card with disturbing pictures of the aftermath of the huge power-grid outage in the winter season of 2020-2021.

It all started with the image above. In late February I was told to pick a prominent, topical, political or social issue that I could use as the inspiration for a culture jam image as a project for my media design class. At the time, the snowstorm in Texas was all over the news, for good reason too, which is why it became the perfect candidate for my project.

When I first started working, I didn’t really know much about the situation going on in Texas, all I knew was that there was a terrible storm and that there was something about a power outage. Obviously I started to do a little research to get some background for my image that I wanted to produce, and in doing so, I began to see the actuality of the events in Texas unraveling before me. It became clear that this was about more than just a freak winter storm, and rather the dangerous effects that capitalism can have on our country. By no means do I think capitalism is a bad thing; in fact I think it has done some great things for our country – hell, America prides itself on being the capitalist country, the epitome of what a capitalist nation should be – but when I see that people’s right to basic necessities like food water, shelter, and heat, that’s when there is an obvious problem.

As I read more and more, I saw that this was much bigger of a problem than I had originally anticipated. While I could’ve simply left the matter alone and just did what I was asked to do for my project, turning a blind eye on the dark truth that lies behind this event, I knew deep-down that I had to talk about it; I am a journalist after all.

If we continue to ignore it and refuse to accept the fact that there needs to be some jurisdiction over certain elements of capitalism, then we will see more events like what happened in Texas occur more frequently. My intention is not to trash on capitalism, nor am I trying to proclaim myself to be some die-hard, socialist warrior, but rather I am going to provide you with background on the event that took place, connect this event to capitalism and define what it means, address why this is a problem, and provide a solution so that we can put an end to this clear abuse of power and avoid an economic, political and social downfall. Ultimately, I am here to advocate that public resources and basic needs should be exploited and controlled by people with money and power.

Before The Storm

In order for you to fully comprehend the gravity of my message, it’s important that I explain to you what happened in Texas last winter. By prefacing with this, I am able to take you through my thought process and show you what led to me falling down this rabbit hole. I want you to feel the spark that I felt, the abundance of emotions that all came swelling at once: the rage, the upset, the aching of my heart, the passion.

The Storm

It began with these images:

This is a clear representation of the Capitalist threat. Private ownership of these things can cause for a lot of gray area when deciding who is and who is not allowed to access basic things which I will discuss later.

Reasons this is bad

This private ownership of public resources is bad for many reasons. It creates inequality, economic instability, monopolistic power, huge environmental costs, among many more things.

So, how do we solve this?

When we look at the easy solution to all of this, it becomes clear that the first step is getting private companies like ERCOT to be owned by the Federal Government so that there is no room for debate on who is allowed access to these resources. ERCOT was able to essentially look at the highest bidder and give them their power back first. Are we insinuating that people with more money are more deserving of basic necessities?

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs | Simply Psychology
When we look at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, we see that physical needs are the most basic level! We cannot have private ownership of these needs if we want to see a thriving nation.

Why I’m “Charged Up” on Apple’s “Batterygate” Scandal

By Preston Webb

Introduction

Picture this.

You are scrolling through Instagram in your room on your old iPhone 6s as the familiar sound of a low battery beep rings into your ears. Annoyed that it needs to be charged a second time today, you plug it into your port as it begins to charge slowly. As it is charging up, you scroll through Apple’s support page on your laptop to see if other people are experiencing the same battery problems as you. On the page, you see others complaining about the low battery life and other problems they are facing regarding charge time. As you sit there baffled by the situation, you realize you aren’t the only person who is dealing with these problems.

Many iPhone 6s and 7 users dealt with this dilemma in 2016 and 2017. Called “Batterygate”, this revolved around Apple users who discovered that the company had secretly been slowing down their iPhones CPU performance, due to an aging battery, without notifying them about the situation.

As an avid phone user, who is constantly getting on my phone to play games, scroll through Twitter feeds, and watch hours of YouTube, the idea of the battery being replaced after constant use is understandable. However, what really makes me mad about the situation is Apple not telling their customers about the problem in hopes for them to go out and buy the new iPhone product.

Though I don’t own any sort of Apple product, this is still important to not only Apple users but also any technology users because it shows to us how greedy Apple is as well as how they are hurting the loyalty of their customers.

History of Apple’s “Batterygate” Scandal

According to ifixit.com, the first instance of “Batterygate” began in 2016, where Apple began to receive reports of problems occurring in older iPhones, like the s6 and 7, where their users began to experience technical issues in the forms of accidental shutdowns. This would lead Apple announcing that problems like these, specifically for the iPhone 6s, only occurred in a “very small number” of phones.

With an increase in reports, Apple decided to release a patch in January 2017 to secretly combat these issues. Through fixing a variety of security bugs and patches, Apple reduced shutdowns at the cost of reducing performance in their phones. Though they thought they were successful in not telling the public about what they done, it wasn’t until December 2017 when the truth unraveled.

In a Reddit post that conducted research of CPU on these phones as well as the aging process of the battery, it was discovered that the old battery was an issue, meaning you could replace it and receive the same phone performance as if it was brand new. This led to Apple releasing a statement about phone throttling, which caused public outcry and the start of many lawsuits.

The Lawsuits

In the beginning, as found from USA Today, the first lawsuits came from two consumers in Los Angeles who filed a breach of contract against Apple due to them not consenting for their phones being slowed down. This would lead to other lawsuits such as one in Chicago, where four consumers asked for $4 million in damages due to Apple tricking them into purchasing a new iPhone for better performance, and in New York, where five consumers filed a suit against them due to them having to purchase a new iPhone for better performance. These would be the start of more than 50 lawsuits against the company for not opening their consumers about them purposely slowing down their performance as a way to hide the truth about an aging battery.

As a way to try to win back the customers, Apple tried many different tactics in order to save their name. These would include discounted battery replacements in January 2018 to $29, providing information about battery health in iOS 11.3 in March 2018, and even offering a $50 credit to consumers who purchased who purchased an out-of-warranty replacement in May 2018. Though they would try and dismiss the lawsuit altogether, it would eventually be settled nearly three years later.

Lawsuit Settlement

In July 2020, a $310 million settlement was made against Apple, in which they had to pay $25 to each customer who was a part of this controversy. This would include iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus or iPhone SE devices that ran iOS version 10.2.1 or later before Dec. 21, 2017. This would have been paid in the form of a claim submitted by them.

Why This is Important to You

The reason why this is important to you, the cell phone user, because it shows that Apple would betray its customers in order to make a quick buck off the newest product. Represented in the cases in New York and Chicago, its users had to purchase the new iPhone in order to receive the same performance they could’ve received in their other phone. Apple knows that they could make money off of people based on the amount of loyally they get from their products.

Many Apple fans swear by their products and they have a large fanbase as well.I bet you are scrolling through an iPhone right now as you are reading this digital essay I made. Though you want to praise Apple for its advancements in technology when it comes to phones and computers, this controversy sheds a light to the greediness it has against you. In order to combat complaints against them, they would secretly try to hide it, putting the blame on the older system (which really isn’t old) instead of telling its users about it. This not hurts their loyalty, it also hurts their wallet, since they have to pay in order to receive better performance they already had.

Conclusion

Apple’s “Batterygate” controversy has hurt not only the reputation of their users, but also potential users who want to switch over to them. Though Apple has made many advancements in technology, consumers need to look out for them when it comes to what they do behind the scenes. This would provide you the ability to have a quality product in the long run, but also save them from spending lots of money on a new phone where their old one is perfectly fine.

A Monster we Created: Today’s Beauty Standards

Unrealistic & Unfair

Beauty standards have been a part of this world for as long as history has been written, especially when it comes to females. Females use to be told exactly what they had to wear each day and some women around the world are still living that reality in some form. However, our current society as a whole has taken these standards to a completely different level. These standards are negatively affecting the youth of our world mentally which can even lead to negative physical effects more than anyone else. These standards affect everyone subconsciously and consciously. Social media has been a key factor in the creation of this different level of beauty expectations. Nowadays, it is easy to go online and find hundreds of people getting praise for their looks that seem to come naturally. For many that results in an immediate realization that they look nothing like that, which makes people feel that they need to look like that to receive praise, validation, and love. Things like photoshop and plastic surgery have became increasingly more popular in the last five to ten years to truly be able to change themself to fit the standards which is something that has not been possible in decades and centuries past.

Mental Health Affecting Body Image

In an article written on “Project Helping” they write about how usually when mental health is mentioned people think of the brain. However, your mental health has a straight connection to your body as well and can affect it in many ways. These beauty standards promote mental disorders such as body dysmorphia, eating disorders, and depression. If someone is already suffering from these or other disorders seeing these beauty standards all over media can deepen them into their suffering. Creating a healthier body image can help battle unrealistic beauty standards and negative mental health at once. Some ways to promote a positive body image within yourself is to embrace what is in the mirror, make a list of things you enjoy about yourself and spend time with yourself. If you experience negative mental health symptoms from beauty standards it is important to not be hard on yourself and know it is normal.

Changing for Standards

A different article was written by Jaclyn Krizanic posted on “The Current” about how the rise of plastic surgery has changed how people react and deal with beauty standards. The article mentions how many celebrities get plastic surgery and deny it which leaves the public thinking that people look that way when they wake up everyone day. The Article went on the state that when celebrities embrace their surgery it encourages a positive mindset for the public. Plastic surgery isn’t a bad thing and should not be seen as the enemy, it’s the expectation to naturally look the same, unknowingly that surgery created that look. Surgery makes beauty unrealistic and is what killing self-esteem and body image across the world. There is no way to completely wipe out all standards and fix the world’s insecurities however, as a society it is important to try and find a solution when things have been taken too far.

Standards for the Future

Beauty will never be definitively defined, it will be forever changing. Everyone looks different and is beautiful in some way. Help promote a positive body image for yourself and the people around you.

Corporations Are Not People

If you’ve been on social media, watched TV or YouTube, or really been exposed to any kind of advertising, you may have noticed a trend in how companies market themselves and interact with people. Whether it’s the Wendy’s Twitter account making an “epic clapback”, things like Amazon’s “Alexa”, or Chase Bank going all in on gay “pride” month, companies want you to think of them like a friend. They want to look like they share the same values as you, can act like you, talk like you, and–most important–sell you stuff you absolutely need.

Maybe you think that this trend is a good thing, and that’s cool. Empty that wallet and swallow it whole, what do I care who takes the sinker with the bait? Whether you like it or not, this happens and will continue, and it is raising a populace that puts a lot of trust in multi-national corporate entities that see them as just $/€/¥. And when a company does something questionable or bad, they are surprised. “[Company] would never [human rights violation]! Their Twitter is so cool and hip!” Corporations are not people, and corporations are not your friend.

A Well Known Example:

You’ve probably heard of Nestle, and you probably know they sell bottled water and some food products. But they sell a lot more than water, as seen below. You may even be using or consuming a Nestle product right now.

Besides owning a whole bunch of crap, another thing Nestle loves to do is claim that water is not a human right. And a whole lot of other messed up stuff, which you can conveniently read in this article right here: https://www.zmescience.com/science/nestle-company-pollution-children

Oopsie!!

But ask anyone at Nestle and they’ll tell you how great of a company they are, how they care for the environment and sustainability and–right on their website–how they protect human rights.

Bonus pandering

Not An Isolated Event

All of this to say in short long form, a company will do whatever it can and pander to whoever it can to try and elevate itself in the public eye and erase or at least minimize past (and current!) “misdeeds”. As another example, here’s Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl commercial from 2018, focused on “inclusion”, “diversity” and any other buzzwords you can throw in.

How sweet, Coke really does care about us all!

Unless you’re a South American worker in their bottling plants and you try to form a labor union. Then good ol’ Coca-Cola brings out the paramilitary death squad and “takes care of the issue“.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2003/jul/24/marketingandpr.colombia

My composite image which interacted with this.

Conclusion ?

So what’s the point, why does it matter, what do you do? Good question, do what you want. But be skeptical of why companies say certain things, or promote certain things. Not everything is the selfless and charitable act it seems.

I should add, this is all not to say “grrr, capitalism bad”. Capitalism good, actually. But some people who have money and power want more money and power, and do bad things, so watch out for yourself.

And remember, corporations are not people, but they are made up of people, and are controlled by certain people.

And those people have names and addresses. Something to think about.

Reduce Your Dairy Intake

Thesis Statement

While milk products may be delicious, reducing the dairy industry’s support is an important step to reduce pollution due to its amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

A collaged image of a boy jumping into a landfill instead of a pool

Introduction

Our job as occupants of this earth is to reduce our footprint as much as we can. This planet is our home and we only have one Earth. It is no surprise that pollution is an issue with irreversible, devasting effects. There are many, many contributions to the pollution and it’s overwhelming to battle each enemy. The emissions of greenhouse gas contribute to pollution. This includes carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. Factories and vehicles produce these gases amongst many other things.

Greenhouse gases are harmful to us and our environment for a number of reasons. They contribute to air pollution and smog so in turn, they can cause respiratory issues. It affects climate change by trapping heat from the sun. This can lead to things such as extreme weather, throwing off the Earth’s natural balance. Therefore it’s vital for us to reduce our production of greenhouse gases. There are many options to do this but I will be focusing on the dairy industry. Taking a small step to switch to almond milk may save the Earth from experience the worst outcome of pollution. If everyone took a small step towards saving the Earth, that is a lot of greenhouse gas humanity would be eliminating.

This article gives a large overview of the dairy industry. Such as how most milk doesn’t come from a farm of grass-fed cows, but rather “massive megadairies housing thousands of cows in miserable conditions”. In these conditions, their manure is stored in huge pits where they could potentially contaminate nearby water.

There are solutions to fix the complex industry from the treatment of the cows and the environmental harm. Production could be at a lower density and away from water and local environments. Growth hormones should be eliminated from the cows’ diet as should the unhealthy production push, both are detrimental to the cows’ health. This gives a view on the efforts that can be taken to fix the dairy industry without destroying it. It offers food for thought on an alternate reality where industry and nature are in harmony.

This article discusses the effect of dairy cows in particular, not necessarily the dairy process. The manure of the cows is one of the largest sources of California’s methane emissions. This introduces the idea that milk production has a lot of layers. The demand for milk equates to the demand for cows. This directly translates to the breeding of cows and in turn, methane production as well.

The Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe

Most people know Edgar Allan Poe by his poem “The Raven” or even some of his short stories such as the “Tell-Tale Heart” or “The Masque of the Red Death.” My own obsession with Poe began in middle school after I had read “The Pit and the Pendulum.” My grandma kept a collection of his books in her house that I read deep into the night, drowning out my brother’s snores.

While these stories describe a mysterious, creepy, and at times, murderous personality, the actual character of Edgar Allan Poe has been much evaded. It has been hard to grasp the kind of person he was, even to historians, as there have been much speculation to both his life and death. This article will be discussing the facts (and fiction) of the mysterious man, while also taking a closer look at his death, which remains a mystery even today.

Sad Beginnings

What is known about Poe is that his life was almost as depressing as his stories. According to the biography by The Poe Museum, Poe’s parents were traveling actors and were in Boston when Poe was born on January 19, 1809. His father, David Poe Jr. left his mother, Eliza Poe, shortly after Poe was born. Eliza died only three years after.

There have been speculation, according to 10 Mind-Blowing Facts about Edgar Allan Poe by Matthew Childers, as to whether or not Poe had been named after the character Edgar in the play King Lear by Shakespeare, as both of his parents participated in the play when he was born. Other sources, such as Why Edgar Allan Poe’s Death Remains a Mystery by Jordan Zakarin, explain that Poe’s foster father, John Allan, gave him the name. Nonetheless, things supposedly began looking up for Poe after he was brought in to live with the wealthy tobacco merchant and his wife, Francis in Richmond, Virginia.

Growing Up

John Allan, having no children of his own, had taken young Poe as his son and heir. Allan planned on giving Poe all of the education and wealth needed to continue in his business, giving him a long, wealthy, and prosperous life.

Those plans were basically eradicated by the time Poe learned how to write. On the backs of some his ledger sheets, he wrote unfinished stories and poems from a young age, aspiring to be his favorite writer, Lord Byron, a British Poet (The Poe Museum). Poe showed no interest in becoming a businessman, much to the disappointment of his foster father.

Even so, Poe still attended the University of Virginia in 1826. Most sources say that while he was marvelous in his classes, he produced a gambling debt. In reference to 10 Mind-Blowing Facts About Edgar Allan Poe, John Allan would give Poe money under the assumption that Poe needed more to pay for his classes, when reality Poe was trying to pay off debt. However, according to the biography by The Poe Museum, Allan sent a third of the money that Poe needed to pay for classes, so Poe took up gambling. Either way, Poe amassed a gambling debt he was unable to get out of, causing him to drop out of the university.

With his head hung low, he returned home, only to find that his fiancée, Elmira Royster, was engaged to another. These series of events squeezed the tension of Poe’s relationship with his foster father even further, until finally, Poe moved out to be on his own. He was accepted into the military at West Point, while still trying to work on his poetry and short story writing. He was thrown out of the program only after eight months.

Poe’s Careers and Marriage(s)

The long list of Edgar Allan Poe’s series of life events that happened after West Point become confusing. According to 13 Haunting Facts about Edgar Allan Poe’s Death by Christopher P. Semtner, after Poe was kicked out of West Point, he became the editor at the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. The Messenger became more popular with Poe’s fiction and book reviews in just seventeen months. The source explains he was fired twice (reasons unknown), and after the second time, he took many other editorial positions in New York and Philadelphia, while also speaking in lectures and public readings.

But The Poe Museum explains that after Poe left West Point, he moved in with his aunt Maria Clemm. While there, he became close with his cousin, Virginia. Meanwhile, Poe’s foster father passed away, leaving Poe out of his will. Instead John Allan left everything to an illegitimate child Poe had never even met.

Poe was living in poverty, and in no doubt needed money. He started publishing more of his short stories, winning him a contest run by the Saturday Visitor. This gave Poe writing fuel to publish more stories and to acquire a job at the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond.

The source also explains how Poe made the Messenger one of the most popular literary magazines in the south with his writing and book reviews. This is where his rivalry began with Rufus Griswold.

When he was twenty-seven, Poe married Virginia, who was only thirteen years old at the time. Poe still did not make enough money. Whether or not he actually was fired from the Messenger or he left, he still moved to New York City to pursue more editorial jobs.

While married and still unable to make a living, Poe wrote the most popular poem (arguably) in the world, “The Raven” which was published in January 1845. The poem would make him nearly famous overnight, but he was only paid about fifteen dollars for the publication.

According to The Poe Museum, the publication of “The Raven” drew more crowds to his lectures and his public readings. Because of it’s fame, Poe began demanding better pay for his work and he continued on to publish two more books that same year.

While things seemed to be looking up for Poe, in 1846, disaster struck. Virginia’s health began to go down hill, and fast. Poe moved out of New York City and to a cottage in the country. In 1847, his wife, Virginia, died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-four. It was said that her death devastated Poe so much, he could not write anything for months.

In the summer of 1849, Poe moved back to Richmond, Virginia. There, he once again met his first fiancée, Elmira Royster, who was now a widow. Their love sparked once again, and not too long after, they became engaged.

Unfortunately, Poe would not live to see his wedding day.

Poe’s Mysterious Death

Buzzfeed Unsolved takes a look at the death and life of Edgar Allan Poe

There are five days in which Poe was missing. No one heard from him nor knew where he was. According to 13 Haunting Facts about Edgar Allan Poe’s Death, one of the last letters Poe ever wrote was to a Mrs. St. Leon. In the letter, they set up a meeting in Philadelphia so that Poe could edit a book of her poetry. He left for Philadelphia in October of 1849.

A week before his trip to Philadelphia, Poe went to see his doctor friend, John carter. Elmira Shelton was concerned for his health and said that he appeared ill to her. Carter advised Poe to stay in Richmond a couple of more days before going on his trip. When he left Carter’s house, Poe accidentally took Carter’s sword cane instead of his own.

Most sources say he went as far as Baltimore before disappearing. On October 3rd, five or so days after his departure, he was seen outside of the bar, Gunner’s Hall, confused, delirious, wearing clothes that did not fit him, and having no luggage. Later, one trunk of his luggage would be found in Baltimore, the other in Richmond.

Outside of Gunner’s Hall, Poe was recognized by a man named Joseph Walker. He asked Poe if he could contact anyone for him. Poe told him to write a letter to an editor named Joseph Snodgrass. According to Why Edgar Allan Poe’s Death Remains A Mystery, the letter said:

“Dear Sir,

There is a gentlemen, rather worse for wear, at Ryan’s 4th ward polls, who goes under the cognomen of Edgar A. Poe, and who appears in grand distress, and he says he is acquainted with you, he is in need of immediate assistance.

Yours, in haste,

JOS. W. WALKER

To Dr. J.E. Snodgrass”

Poe was then taken to Washington College Hospital. At this point, there is much speculation as to what happened, for both doctors and historians. Poe was put in a windowless room and saw only Dr. John Moran. Poe then died on October 7th, 1849.

There are no records of his hospital stay before his death. There was no autopsy done, as the cause of death was put to be “congestion of the brain.” This saying could mean the doctors who looked after Poe believed he died of a drug or alcohol overdose.

In reference to 13 Haunting Facts about Edgar Allan Poe’s Death, Moran wrote articles and a book called Edgar Allan Poe: A Defense, in order to defuse the rumors that Poe had died of an overdose. Unfortunately, Moran’s writings and accounts of what happened vary, and are not considered reliable.

However, according to Why Edgar Allan Poe’s Death Remains A Mystery, Poe was not a heavy drinker. In fact, he was considered to be a light weight. There were rumors that he drank more when his wife, Virginia died. Not long after, he pledged sobriety and joined the Sons of Temperance a few months before his death. Joseph Snodgrass was passionate about the temperance movement and usually used Poe as an example of how drinking can be dangerous.

There are many theories on how Poe actually died. Some specialists believe that Poe may have had rabies, which would explain his deliriousness and confusion. A researcher and professor at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Dr. R Michale Benitez researched this theory and gained national attention at a medical conference in 1996. According to the accounts of Dr. Moran, Poe became feverish and had spikes of madness. He also, at times, had refused to drink water. Both could be a sign of rabies.

Other theories suggest the flu that turned into pneumonia, carbon monoxide poisoning, or heavy metal poisoning. Most of these theories have been rejected. There is one that seems more plausible than the rest, but it is hard to prove.

Edgar Allan Poe could have been a victim of “cooping.” This is a type of electoral fraud in which people were kidnapped off the street, drugged, and then forced to participate in the voting polls over and over again. Eventually, the victim would be let go, but the drugs in their system would cause them to die. Gunner’s Hall, the tavern that Poe was found outside of, was next to a voting place. This could explain Poe’s deliriousness, madness, and even the fact he wasn’t even wearing his own clothes when he was found.

After Death

An obituary for Edgar Allan Poe was published by a person named Ludwig. This obituary painted the picture that Poe was a horrible human being, obsessed with greed, drugs, alcohol, and women. The only good thing the obituary mentioned was Poe’s writing skill, but even his statue as a human being was diminished.

“Still though, he regarded society as composed of villains, the sharpness of his intellect was not of that kind which enabled him to cope with villainy, while it continually caused him overshots, to fail at the success of honesty.” (Death of Edgar Allan Poe)

Some strange happenings occurred even after Edgar Allan Poe died. According to 13 Haunting Facts about Edgar Allan Poe’s Death, some of these events including his cat abruptly dying, people taking Poe’s hair while visiting his body (including Joseph Snodgrass), and various accounts of people seeing Poe after he had died.

The more creepier events happened decades after Poe’s death. Edgar Allan Poe was buried in an unmarked grave on the plot of his grandfather in Westminster Burying Grounds in Baltimore. Twenty-six years after the death of Poe, teachers and students raised enough money for an actual monument to be placed next to the cemetery gate. While the coffin was being moved, the bottom fell out, exposing Poe’s remains. Some of the pieces of the coffin became a collector’s item.

Virginia, Poe’s wife who died of tuberculosis, was originally buried in Poe’s landlord’s crypt in the Bronx. After Poe had been moved to the new location, admirers of Poe suggested Virginia be moved next to him. Some developers had built over her cemetery and moved her body. One of Poe’s biographers, William Gill, had rescued her bones. He had kept Virginia’s remains under his bed for years before the admirers of Poe suggested the move.

Closing Thoughts

While Edgar Allan Poe lived a sad life, most of his work is still known far and wide, even today. He is known for creating the detective fiction genre with the character C. Auguste Dupin, who appeared in “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” The character became the inspiration to create others like Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie. He is also known as one of the first authors to demand a higher wage and income while publishing his stories.

While there may be a lot of speculation about Edgar Allan Poe’s life and death, no one can argue that Poe was one of the most genius and memorable writers in history.

Harmful Coping Techniques Among College Students

How college students deal with stress

In recent years mental health has become a major topic in our society and one demographic that mental health has been important for is teenagers and college students. Students have to deal with adjusting to living on their own, completing schoolwork, and finding a potential job. Now with Covid-19 anxiety and stress had increased among students as well as negative coping techniques. With the increase of stress, many students want a coping technique, which can often be a negative coping technique such as drugs, alcohol, or binge eating. But a very prominent one among teens and students is their phones. Phones are designed to be addictive and simply just to check Twitter or one more video can easily end in a four-hour binge. And now with classes being mainly online students spend almost every waking hour in front of a screen. But the thing is, it has become the norm in society for people to be on their screens, we humans depend so much on our screens. And now more than ever people are staying up late on their devices which is causing sleep deprivation which can add to the stress. This stress and addiction can also lead to students procrastinating and adding to the stress. Some alternatives to escaping into your phone can be reading a book or going for a walk.

Student’s added stress

How Marvel Shapes a Cinematic Universe

Why are Marvel movies so addictive? This article will explore the deep structure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We can think of the “cinematic universe” as a special kind of imaginary world. This is one of the key aspects for the creation of such cinematic universes and imaginary worlds, the artistic creation of fantasy films and fantasy literature. For example, the Middle-earth world in “The Lord of the Rings”, the wizarding world in “Harry Potter”, and the beneficent countries and boroughs in “The Hunger Games”, and even such a special land in “Game of Thrones”.

Game of Thrones

Every successful fantasy series provides audiences with a hypothetical world with clear logic, a complete worldview, and unique rules.

“You’ve become part of a bigger universe. You just don’t know it yet.” — Nick Fury

Elements of a Cinematic Universe

Compared to the imagination of literary creation, the art of film has more detailed requirements for the construction of a worldview. Since the 1960s, with the continuous development of the film industry and film technology, we can see that the construction of an imaginary worldview has become one of the increasingly important core features of the new Hollywood cinema.

More and more films are devoted to providing a rich and complete environment and background for the characters. In contrast to conventional narrative rules, the emphasis on setting and background serves the characters and the story.

How does the Marvel Cinematic Universe attract audiences?

Jas Deogan, explores how the MCU has systematically constructed a Cinematic Universe in an article. He outlined six steps:

  • Laying down the foundations
  • Connecting the dots
  • Expanding a universe
  • Shaking things up
  • The overarching vision
  • A vision brought to life
Twenty films deep in the franchise, Marvel still manages to create enjoyable content.

The creation of the Marvel film series has undoubtedly inherited this over-design of the series for the imaginary world, in which we can see more and more rich details about the Earth and the universe, which are revealed little by little in this series.

Such some details and worldview, it is not simply to serve the plot, but also to provide the audience with an unlimited imagination. Not only do viewers actively pursue and explore details of the art and worldview beyond the story itself in social media, but they also actively pursue each new film that emerges.

Before the release of “Avengers: Endgame” the audience was more enthusiastic about the simple few minutes of the pilot trailer than they were about the ending of the movie.

In fact, we can also see that it is also very careful about the placement of pop music.

It will insert the golden songs of different eras in some core passages of the movie so that the fans of different mediums can be more focused.

Another great tip for the Marvel Universe is its use of post – credits scene, including the production of various trailers. It not only requires the audience to passively enjoy the plot changes of the movie but also requires the audience to actively solve the mystery. Thus, in an invisible way, it also continues the vitality of this kind of movie universe.

Spencer Harrison, Arne Carlsen, and Miha Škerlavaj analyzed 338 interviews with producers, directors, and writers and 140 reviews from leading critics, and examined its network of actors and behind-the-scenes workers. They argue that Marvel’s success relies on four principles.

  • Choosing experienced inexperienced people
  • Leveraging a stable core
  • Constantly challenging the formula
  • Fostering customer curiosity.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an independent kingdom with complete spatial, symbolic, temporal, logical, and physical elements. This world not only supports each story and the superheroes in the story but also continues to nourish the variety of stories that precede and follow it. It has its own space and its own time, leaving a wealth of possibilities for the series.
